From staff reports

A $5,000 grant from the Rochester Area Foundation will aid the restoration of the historic Plummer House water tower, which was damaged by arson in October.

The foundation said the money will go toward the purchase of materials to restore many of the wooden features that were destroyed or damaged inside the tower. The water tower served the historic house on the hill that was built in 1917 and owned by Dr. Henry Plummer. The Rochester Park and Recreation Department owns it and will use its laborers for the work.

The award was part of $50,350 awarded in the third of three distributions made by the foundation board.

Among the other awards the foundation announced were:

  • $25,000 to the Intercultural Mutual Assistance Association to help pay for an energy efficient green building being constructed for IMAA.

  • A total of $10,000 in grant awards from the foundation will go to the Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras to help buy percussion instruments. It includes a $3,000 matching grant to encourage additional financial support from the community.

  • The Rochester Active Sports Club will receive $10,350 to be used in the development and maintenance of a five- to six-kilometer trail through Quarry Hill Park. The trail will have year-round uses, including cross country skiing in the winter and hiking nature walks in the summer.
