Mervlyn Kitashima, named the 2003 Mother of the Year by American
Mothers Inc. and the state of Hawaii, will speak about her life
during a presentation Oct. 4 in Mayo High School's auditorium.
Kitashima is the parent coordinator for the Kamehameha school
district in Honolulu. She speaks around the country about the
importance of parenting and family involvement in children's education.
Her life started with major challenges, including becoming a mother
at age 16. She draws on her life story and experiences being the
mother of seven and grandmother of eight to inspire others about
parenting and education.
The Southeastern Service Cooperation and the Rochester Area
Foundation are sponsors of Kitashima's presentation, which is
scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
